Daddy

I'm sorry I haven't touched your hand
In the time it took you to forget who I am
And I'm sorry I didn't run after you
Even though I knew you wouldn't pull through
Where I withdrew I should have lunged
Daddy, I'm sorry I didn't run

Do you remember pushing me on the swing
Oh, how I soared with you as my wings
Or the Elvis cassette in the K-Mart aisle
You told me he was the King, I can still see your smile
Has the light burnt out, has it surrendered
Daddy, oh Daddy, do you remember

We could have been a better pair
But now you just sit and pluck flowers from the air
Wish I'd tried more love, wish I'd tried to understand
That Daddies can't be perfect, even if little girls think they can
If you can forgive me or if I ever made you proud
Daddy, dear Daddy, I wish you could tell me now

Daddy, my Daddy, where have you gone
Daddy, sweet Daddy and a Hank Locklin song
Daddy is climbing in his rig one more time
Daddy, oh Daddy, I love you, goodbye

The Curious Blues

We're a curious shade of blue
But feel no need to hide like porn
Drop the anvil and crack the levee
Sprinkle flavor wherever you roam
You see, there's something to swallow everything
And there's something beyond that ridge
Home may be on the other side
Cause hope always hangs on to the wish
It's a funny kind of chaos
But turns out it's a perfect pour
It wasn't blackness that cut the cord
On the day that you were born
A breed apart, a curse, a sin
It doesn't speak of truth
Exactly and all that we needed
AKA, a curious shade of blue

Run Along Now

Go, run along now
There's a new rising Sun
Shadows shouldn't keep you
From the embers of its dawn
I've seen you dance with angels
I've seen you under the devil's thumb
How you glide like Ginger Rogers
Isn't the dance where you belong
I can't keep you beside me
And I can't cage you behind
Or bind your smile to yesterday
Twist you up in slivered twine
Go, be happy
Stand in tomorrow's hope
Jump the moon, weave your wand
Run along now, go

Fighting For The Roost

That's what love would do
It would keep love safe
It wouldn't trade in a blessing
For a miracle impossibly far away
Love would let her walk away
If that's where her heart led
Not block her from a wonderland
If she believes it lies ahead
It wouldn't bind her to good enough
Cause that's where it finds its home
Rather see her aim for the Milky Way
Than settle for the sediment down below
It wouldn't anchor happiness
Cause happy is meant to fly
Rather watch her flitter to the moon
Than watch her struggle with the climb

They Come In Birds

They come to me in birds
Like crystals come in snow
Drifting down like morning fog
Rising like peasants that overthrow
Like a breath offers another chance
Like forgiveness finds us redeemed
Like wishes tether to the stars
And weightlessness comes in dreams
